Job description

As an Apprentice Chef aboard PS Australian Star, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop your culinary skills under the guidance of the Head Chef and Sous Chef. You will assist in preparing and cooking meals, maintaining the kitchen, and ensuring high standards of food quality and hygiene. Your role is vital in supporting the kitchen team and gaining valuable experience in a dynamic river cruise environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  1. Assisting in Food Preparation:
    • Work closely with the Head Chef and Sous Chef to assist in preparing ingredients and cooking dishes according to the menu.
    • Learn and follow recipes and cooking techniques provided by senior kitchen staff.
  2. Food Safety and Hygiene:
    • Maintain strict adherence to food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and sanitation practices.
    • Participate in training sessions and apply knowledge of food safety practices in the kitchen.
  3. Food Presentation and Plating:
    • Assist in plating dishes according to the Head Chef’s standards for presentation and aesthetics.
    • Learn to create visually appealing and high-quality dishes for guests.
  4. Inventory and Stock Management:
    • Help monitor kitchen inventory and assist with ordering supplies as needed.
    • Ensure proper storage and rotation of ingredients to minimize waste and maintain freshness.
  5. Cleaning and Maintenance:
    • Assist in cleaning kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
    • Help with the daily maintenance of the kitchen to keep it organized and efficient.
  6. Collaboration with Kitchen Team:
    • Work as part of the kitchen team, supporting and learning from the Head Chef, Sous Chef, and other culinary staff.
    • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
  7. Learning and Development:
    • Take advantage of learning opportunities provided by the Head Chef and other senior staff.
    • Continuously develop culinary skills, knowledge, and techniques through hands-on experience and guidance.

 

ACADEMIC OR TRADE QUALIFICATIONS

The Apprentice Chef role offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional culinary environment. With the guidance and mentorship of the Head Chef and Sous Chef, you will develop your skills and contribute to providing exceptional dining experiences for guests aboard PS Australian Star.

  • Culinary Education: Pursuing or completed a degree or diploma in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Interest in Culinary Arts: A passion for cooking and a strong desire to learn and grow in the culinary field.
  • Basic Culinary Knowledge: Familiarity with basic cooking techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail in food preparation and presentation.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Ability to work well as part of a team and communicate effectively with senior kitchen staff and other crew members.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, learning to adjust to changing demands and guest preferences.
