A Blend of Heritage & Sustainability
A Blend of Heritage & Sustainability
The PS Australian Star is driven by the perfect marriage of tradition and innovation — a fully restored 1907 Richard Garrett & Sons steam engine working in harmony with a modern diesel-electric system. Our wood-fired boiler uses only naturally fallen river redgum, meaning no trees are cut down for fuel. This practice not only honours the environment but also supports local land management by clearing fallen timber that can pose a bushfire risk.
Our hybrid propulsion system is designed for maximum efficiency, reducing overall emissions while preserving the authentic paddlesteamer experience. We operate under strict environmental guidelines to ensure the Murray River remains a pristine and thriving ecosystem for future generations.
A Steam Engine with a Story
Built in 1907 by Richard Garrett & Sons, one of England’s most celebrated steam engine manufacturers, our engine has had a long and varied working life across Australia. Garrett & Sons, founded in 1778 in Leiston, Suffolk, began by producing farming equipment before expanding into portable steam engines, becoming a major employer with around 2,500 staff at its peak.
After more than a century of service in different industries, this beautifully restored engine is now embarking on her final and perhaps most memorable role — powering the PS Australian Star along the majestic Murray River, continuing the rich tradition of steam navigation in Australia.
