Enjoy the spectacular scenery of Australia's longest river, The Murray, aboard the world's only cruising wood-fired paddlesteamer and Australia's most luxurious boutique river cruise. PS Emmylou will step you back to the romantic days of Australia's Paddlesteamers. The side-wheel paddlesteamers are distinctly Australian having first plied the Murray river in 1853, establishing a thriving industry which survived until rail and roads began to service the region near the turn of the century. Whether your a nature lover, a budding historian or culture enthusiast, a leisurely journey on PS Emmylou will delve you into the beauty and pioneering history of the Murray River.

The Journey

On our Discovery 3 night tour guests will enjoy leisurely cruising 160km's of the winding upper Murray River. Cruising aboard a traditional wood fired paddlesteamer engages your senses from the moment you board: feel the warmth of the 1906 steam engine as the engineer stokes the boiler with Redgum logs, climb up to the wheelhouse to chat to the Skipper, or just sit and gaze at the changing reflections in the water and listen to the lilting rhythm and swish of the paddlewheels as PS Emmylou takes you back to a bygone era of romantic travel.

During the cruise step off the vessel to experience an onshore tour highlighting places of geographical, historical and cultural significance as well as a quaint riverside winery. Tour the historic Perricoota Station, first built in 1843 for an insight into the history of the area and St Anne's Winery, the largest producer of wines in the Perricoota Region and enjoy meeting the owners as they lead you through their cellar, enjoying complimentary tastings. Guests will also embark on a small boat eco cruise through the UNESCO World Heritage listed Barmah Forest in search of local flora and birdlife in the world’s longest strand of Red River Gum. With evenings spent on the river bank around a campfire and under a beautiful night sky, this journey is sure to be a highlight of your holiday.

Three nights on the Emmylou slowly meandering along the river was exceptional. The old world charm and pace from the start automatically made you slow down and appreciate what we have. Low clouds and drizzle, with puffs of smoke drifting past while having dinner on the back deck on the first night set the tone for the trip - and the experience continued for the rest of the trip. Really helpful staff that do everything they can to make trip perfect. Beware, there is a lot of great food, you do run the risk of over indulging, but that's just a part of a slow trip on the river.
