Revisit the romance of Australia's Paddlesteamers

Enjoy the spectacular scenery of Australia's longest river, The Murray, aboard the world's only cruising wood-fired paddlesteamer and Australia's most luxurious boutique river cruise. PS Emmylou will step you back to the romantic days of Australia's Paddlesteamers. The side-wheel paddlesteamers are distinctly Australian having first plied the Murray river in 1853, establishing a thriving industry which survived until rail and roads began to service the region near the turn of the century. Whether your a nature lover, a budding historian or culture enthusiast, a leisurely journey on PS Emmylou will delve you into the beauty and pioneering history of the Murray River.

The Journey

Experience the wonders of the river with an overnight journey cruising the winding upper Murray river. Cruising aboard a traditional wood fired paddlesteamer engages your senses from the moment you board: feel the warmth of the 1906 steam engine as the engineer stokes the boiler with Redgum logs, climb up to the wheelhouse to chat to the Skipper, or just sit and gaze at the changing reflections in the water and listen to the lilting rhythm and swish of the paddlewheels as PS Emmylou takes you back to a bygone era of romantic travel.

Boarding at 6pm your ready to relax with a cocktail from the bar or a visit to the wheelhouse to see the Skipper as the sun starts to set over the river. Listen to the river birds evening chorus, watch for kangaroos, egrets and many other species of birds as the stars begin to appear while you enjoy your chef prepared 5 course dinner. PS Emmylou powerful floodlights then light the banks of the river as nocturnal wildlife begin to appear. After steaming upstream Emmylou turns to continue cruising downstream back under the Echuca/Moama Bridge where we pass the imposing Echuca Wharf lit up for the evening and other Paddlesteamers moored after their day on the river. Emmylou continues to cruise downriver with her powerful lamps lighting up the riverbanks as the local wildlife settles for the evening before pulling into our mooring for the evening at Layfield Lane. Here we set up a campfire (subject to weather) under the stars where you can enjoy a good yarn with your fellow passengers. Relax with a beverage from the bar or roast marshmallows before retiring for the evening at your leisure. In the morning before breakfast early rises can enjoy a riverside stroll before PS Emmylou then departs for the Port of Echuca where we reluctantly say farewell.

    Overnight Stay, Five course dinner

We had an awesome dinner. All of the courses were really delicious. The service was exceptional and the Captain Peter, the waitress and host, Cathy, gave us the best time. We met dale, who was the engine controller and he was very hospitable and knowledgeable. The cabin that we stayed in was comfortable, cool and clean. We slept vert well. It could be even better to have an ensuite in each cabin which we believe is going to happen. The breakfast provided was beautiful, as with the care and service. Will recommend to everyone that loves a bit of country charm and a tour into our Australian past and current times on the Murray River.
